For the past fifteen years or so, voluntary help in the field of accompaniment at the end of life significantly developed. The volunteers therefore needed to acquire a legal status, as the wards increasingly requested. this was done with the law of June 1999. We invite you to read this article concerning our work.

To be volunteer in accompaniment at the end of lifetime is a commitment that is part of a lifeproject. That requires a great personal reflection and an investment which exceeds the actual time spent in the association. It is important to know that beeing a volunteer requires first of all a training. The association Rivage enables you to follow a serious training thanks to professionals whose experience is most valuable. Then, throughout his action, the volunteer is part of a team that is also his supervisor.. He will receive regular support within the team and with a psychologist, and will follow other trainings on a regular basis.

If you are interested in such voluntary help, you should first question yourself on your motives, your own personal experience which brought you to this desire, as well as on your personal capacity of listening and compassion. To help you in this process, you can contact Mrs. Marie Quinquis, who is in charge of the training, for a preliminary interview. To be able to start the initial training, you will have to pass two interviews in which you will be asked to express your goal and your motivations. If a "selection" is made, its purpose is only to ensure the strength of your commitment. The association feels responsible for the well-being of its volunteers and doesn't want to bring anyone to pains he won't be able to cope with.

Following these interviews, the people who wish to commit themselves to this voluntary help with the association Rivage will have to follow a nine month training at a rate of one weekend per month. This may seem long but it is necessary, not so much to learn the essential knowledge, but more especially for the volunteer to get a clear picture of what he wishes to accomplish.

This type of voluntary help thus requires to give of one's time and oneself. Here are the commitments that the volunteers take at the time of their integration to the medical team after the initial formation.

Commitments of the volunteer:

bulletTo Ensure 4 hours a week presence minimum
bulletTo take part once a month to a team meeting
bulletTo take part once a month in a support group around a psychologist
bulletTo attend the weekends of training (three times a year)
bulletTo be able to work with the team
bulletTo respect the medical secrecy and the confidentiality (as wanted in the code of health)
bulletTo work with the association Rivage a least for a year, after a probation period of three month and periods of self evaluation with the volunteer's manager
